No Longer Naive 红颜向前@女大十八变

A long journey 李家表姑娘的路程

07/20/2008 13:06
The novel starts with a different approach of the 'alternate ending' to Hua Mulan (1998). Instead of Jili being reunited with Mulan and Yiren, instead Jili returns to the Heavens and accepts his new post as a Guardian General.

Gone with the wind, was her love for Jili. She knew in her heart, she must look on to the future and courageously approach what was in it for her.

It wasn't the end, it was a new beginning.

Now Yiren knows it is the time she must make up for the wrongdoings she had done to the wealth-desiring father she had, the father she had lost contact all these years... But has life changed for the better? In addition, Yiren stumbles on an old martial arts manual in an abandoned temple. Will becoming a martial artist like her cousin and his wife prove a difference?

Characters

  • Xu Yiren (徐依人), also known as Xiaoyi 小依 (22 years old): though born with a 'silver spoon in her mouth', her days during Mongol assasinator Zhuang Xiaoqian's invasion has taught her well how to endure hardship and not to depend on others as she did when she was younger. She is well-versed in terms of cloth-spinning and sewing of the past, a great cook and also literate. One of her best known features would be her almond-shaped eyes which bore a look of curiosity as well as longingness.

Dong Xiaoyan as Xu Yiren

The Tangs (the siblings she put up with initially on reaching Shangyi)

  • Tang Shangyu (汤赏欲), also known as Yu-ge (23 years old): he is the head of the home, and has two sides to him: the naughty side and the honest, kind side. His parents died when he was 14, and so he carried a heavy duty to take care of his two siblings, Shangye and Shangyan. He is well-versed in qinggong (a martial art based on flying) and was never seen anywhere without a flute.
  • Tang Shangye (汤赏野), also known as Ye-ge (19 years old): Shangye, unlike the silent Shangyu, is completely the opposite: wilful, arrogant and notorious. He takes the girls who love him for granted and gets his benefits out of them. He has many lovers and is not looked up to by Fan Qiao, the only daughter of the richest merchant in Shangyi.
  • Tang Shangyan (汤赏燕), also known as Xiaoyan (17 years old): Unlike her two brothers, Shangyan was born with low intelligence and was often bullied by Shangye in their childhood. She is slow and takes a long time to understand what is given to her to do, but at the same time she is a flawless beauty! She and Fan Xiao, Fan Qiao's brother, fall in love with each other, but as Fan Xiangluo, the Fans' father, was the cause of her mother's death, she kept all her feelings to herself.
Others (will add more)

  • Liu Xiangzi (刘湘子), addressed in Shangyi as Xiang-ge (25 years old): Xiangzi is the only survivor of Hua Mulan's army, other than Mulan and Jili who were involved as well in the major battle which surprisingly, a small army could defeat a whole Mongol army! He believes in fortune-telling and palmistry, but at the same time is quite intelligent. Xiang is Yiren's companion in her journey, as he believes a young woman travelling is prone to run into some difficulties, and after living for some time with the Tangs, he starts to develop feelings for Shangyan but decides to aide her instead in her admiration for Fan Xiao.
  • Chu Hui(楚荟), also known as Chuchu (19 years old): Chu Hui is Fan Xiao's fiancee and they have been engaged since she was in her mother's womb but Chu Hui does not like Fan Xiao. On arriving at Shangyi, she runs into Liu Xiangzi and from that point, develops feelings for him.

Note

I decided to write this fanfic because I was no good at writing Neverwinter Nights 2 fics and scored no hits on the two episodes I posted on NWN2Fic and Fanfiction.Net. 'Mulan' was the first drama in my teens that I really took a fancy to, with the antics and stuff. I watched a lot of Singaporean dramas in the past, but nothing as comedical as this. However, there were so many parts of the drama that could be improved. Otherwise, it could have gotten a better rating. Firstly, the guy who acted as Jili (his name is Sun Xing) was definitely too old and ugly to be the character Jili. Perhaps someone younger and handsomer would have done the trick. The drama was too repetitive too, with Li Liang and Mulan arguing most of the time and the mother adding oil to the fire. And then, Liu Zi as Zhuang Xiaoqian wasn't convincing enough. She wasn't a 'wan ren mi', so how could the Prince have fallen for her? This makes no sense. Even Dong Xiaoyan as Yiren was better looking than her.

Now if Jili was to become an immortal again, and Yiren was to find a new life somewhere.. In a 'journey' novel. I've written several journey novels, a main one a few years ago featuring a young man, Li Weiyao, on a journey in search for his late mother, which was partially helped by the river carrying his unconscious body. He did odd jobs at the village and had a duel with a mysterious girl in white, Xu Hongyan, and eventually learns that she is his cousin, his mother's niece, but only after he has started to like her. However, Hongyan cannot reciprocate his feelings for her and likes someone else later on.

Other than 'journey' novels, I've planned one 'Palace' novel inspired to me by the beginning part of 'Joan of Arc' where a young man is the future leader of a kingdom, but only because he married a royale though. I have revised 'Shadows of the Palace' and changed some of the main characters' names. Also, this story is a supposed collaboration with another new story I am thinking of.

In Shadows aka Crimson Dust, I chose one of my best friends in real life, who offered me this excellent local webhosting, as the King, Ji Shen. Ji Shen and Jia Qiwan (Wan Yuanyang), the protagonist, are both surprised when they meet in the Palace Court as the King and the Imperial Advisor! Jia Qiwan, is in fact the retired Advisor's granddaughter and is hence the best choice for Advisor, but despite being friends in real life under disguise, both of them do not know who the other is actually, thinking they are both commoners! The story focuses on the affairs of the kingdom while the exiled Empress decides to get back at Ji Shen's mother for revealing her evil deeds, by joining an evil cult and now emerging as the leader of the cult. She sends Chen Jieshi, her disciple, after Qiwan, who Ji Shen has sent to investigate some cases along with her chosen general, Shan Jun.
